Sembawang's New Swimming Complex

The Bukit Canberra Swimming Complex opened on 15 October 2023, inaugurated by Health Minister and Sembawang MP Ong Ye Kung. It is part of the Bukit Canberra integrated hub, a 12-hectare development that also includes a hawker centre (44 stalls), polyclinic, indoor sports hall and running trails.

The site has a layered history. It was previously part of demolished Chong Pang Village, which had a wet market and hawker centre before the 1980s. Nearby stands the Old Admiralty House (built 1940), a National Monument that once housed the Commander of the British Naval Base. A swimming pool near the house was believed to have been built by Japanese prisoners of war after World War II; it was demolished for the new development.

The name "Canberra" comes from Rear-Admiral R.H.O. Lane-Poole of the Australian naval squadron H.M.A.S. Canberra, who visited Singapore in 1937. The road was named after his ship. The old Sembawang Swimming Complex on Deptford Road, built for British servicemen before World War II, closed in the 1990s and has since been demolished.
