What students demonstrate

Gold (Stage 6) is the final stage of SwimSafer. Students swim 400 metres total across six strokes and complete advanced survival and rescue skills.

Clothing for assessment. Assessed in swimwear, long pants and t-shirt. A key skill is converting wet pants into a self-made float. It tests stamina and resourcefulness while weighed down by heavy, wet clothing.

On assessment day. A black swimming cap is issued to all Stage 6 participants when they arrive at the Centralised Assessment Centre.

Entries & Exits

  1. Standing dive.

Sculling & Body Orientation

  1. Scull, float or tread whilst making a self-made float within 5 min.

Underwater Skills

  1. In at least 1.8m deep water, perform head-first surface dive (tuck or pike) and perform ear equalisation if necessary.
  2. Swim through hoops on pool bottom for 5m.

Movement / Swimming / Strokes

  1. 100m front crawl within 3:00 min.
  2. 100m breaststroke within 4:00 min.
  3. 100m backstroke within 3:20 min.
  4. 50m survival backstroke.
  5. 50m sidestroke.
  6. 15m butterfly.

Survival & Activity Skills

What you wear & carry

Swimwear T-shirt Long pants Goggles
  1. Clothed in swimwear, long pants and t-shirt: compact jump entry.
  2. Headfirst surface dive to 1.8m depth.
  3. Swim through underwater hoops for 5m.
  4. 45m front-crawl sprint.
  5. 50m slow survival stroke.
  6. Remove and float with pants within 5 minutes.
  7. Demonstrate H.E.L.P. for 1 minute.
  8. Swim 25m with self-made float before exiting.
